Large magnetodielectric effects in orthorhombic HoMnO3 and YMnO3

چکیده
We have found a remarkable increase (up to 60%) of the dielectric constant with the onset of magnetic order at 42 K in the metastable orthorhombic structures of YMnO3 and HoMnO3 that proves the existence of a strong magnetodielectric coupling in the compounds. Magnetic, dielectric, and thermodynamic properties show distinct anomalies at the onset of the incommensurate magnetic order and thermal hysteresis effects are observed around the lock-in transition temperature at which the incommensurate magnetic order locks into a temperature independent wave vector. The Mn3+ spins and Ho3+ moments both contribute to the magnetodielectric coupling. A large magnetodielectric effect was observed in HoMnO3 at low temperature where the dielectric constant can be tuned by an external magnetic field resulting in a decrease of up to 8% at 7 T. By comparing data for YMnO3 and HoMnO3 the contributions to the coupling between the dielectric response and Mn and Ho magnetic moments are separated.

Dielectric anomaly and magnetic response of epitaxial orthorhombic YMnO3 thin films
The structure, magnetic response, and dielectric response of the grown epitaxial thin films of the orthorhombic phase of YMnO3 oxide on Nb:SrTiO3 (001) substrates have been measured. We have found that a substrate-induced strain produces an in-plane compression of the YMnO3 unit cell. The magnetization versus temperature curves display a significant zero-field cooling (ZFC)-field cooling hyster...
متن کاملDetermination of the intrinsic ferroelectric polarization in orthorhombic HoMnO3
Whether or not a large ferroelectric polarization P exists in the orthorhombic HoMnO3 with E-type antiferromagnetic spin ordering remains one of the unresolved, challenging issues in the physics of multiferroics. The issue is closely linked to an intriguing experimental difficulty in determining the P of polycrystalline specimens, namely that conventional pyroelectric current measurements perfo...
متن کاملEvidence for Large Electric Polarization From Collinear Magnetism in TmMnO3
There has been tremendous research activity in the field of magnetoelectric (ME) multiferroics after Kimura et al (2003 Nature 426 55) showed that antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric orders coexist in orthorhombically distorted perovskite TbMnO3 and are strongly coupled. It is now generally accepted that ferroelectricity in TbMnO3 is induced by magnetic long-range order that breaks the symmetry...
متن کاملOrigin of the large polarization in multiferroic YMnO3 thin films revealed by soft- and hard-X-ray diffraction.
We investigated the magnetic structure of an orthorhombic YMnO(3) thin film by resonant soft x-ray and hard x-ray diffraction. We observed a temperature-dependent incommensurate magnetic reflection below 45 K and a commensurate lattice-distortion reflection below 35 K. These results demonstrate that the ground state is composed of coexisting E-type and cycloidal states. Their different ordering...
متن کاملThe effect of Coulomb correlation and magnetic ordering on the electronic structure of two hexagonal phases of ferroelectromagnetic YMnO3
The electronic structure of YMnO3 in its highand low-temperature hexagonal phases has been investigated within the local spin-density approximation (LSDA) and by the LSDA + U method which takes into account the local Coulomb interaction between d electrons of transitionmetal ions. In contrast to the case for orthorhombic manganites, the d4-configuration degeneracy is already lifted in the high-...
